The Blackwater River — An Abhainn Mhór, the Big River — runs through some of the most beautiful landscape in Munster, through Cappoquin and Lismore and out to Youghal Bay. Blackwater Distillery sits on its banks, and takes its name, its water, and much of its character from that setting.
A Micro-Distillery with Macro Ambition
Founded in west Waterford as one of the first wave of Irish craft distilleries, Blackwater quickly established a reputation for producing spirits with genuine identity rather than generic craft-market product. The gin range — which began with a classic London Dry style — expanded to encompass seasonal and experimental releases that have attracted attention well beyond Ireland.
The whiskey programme has been building patiently in the background — a long game that requires the kind of commitment that only makes sense if you believe in what you’re making. West Waterford is whiskey country by heritage, and Blackwater is part of a small revival of that tradition.
The River in the Bottle
What unites the Blackwater range is a sense of place — the botanicals, the water, the climate of west Waterford. These are not interchangeable premium spirits with aspirational branding; they taste of something specific. That specificity is what makes them interesting.
Named for the great river, made on its banks. Blackwater Distillery produces spirits that taste unmistakably of where they come from — which is the whole point.
Visit and Buy
Blackwater offers distillery tours and a retail offering on site. The full range is available online and through good off-licences and whiskey shops across Ireland and internationally.
