The Reg: Five Bars, a Rooftop, and the Best Oysters in Waterford

The Reg is built around something no other pub in Ireland can claim: the 900-year-old City Wall, constructed at the same time as the adjacent Reginald’s Tower, incorporated directly into the fabric of the venue. That’s not a decorative choice — it’s the literal foundation of the building, and it gives The Reg a sense of place that most modern bars spend a lot of money trying to simulate.

Five Bars, One Building

The Reg operates across five distinct bars, each with its own character:

  • Guinness & Oysters — freshly shucked Waterford oysters paired with Guinness, reportedly gone in minutes
  • Seafood Restaurant — full sit-down dining with locally sourced fish and shellfish
  • GastroPub — elevated pub food in a relaxed setting
  • Craft Beer & Whiskey Bar — serious selections of both
  • Late Night Bar & Club — for those who aren’t ready to leave

The Rooftop

Above it all sits Waterford’s only rooftop café bar — a genuinely spectacular vantage point overlooking the River Suir and Reginald’s Tower. In good weather, there is no better seat in the city.

Built into the 900-year-old city wall, with a rooftop overlooking Reginald’s Tower and a Guinness and Oysters bar that sells out every night. The Reg is what Waterford’s Viking Triangle deserves.

The Floors

The Reg operates across five distinct bar areas, ranging from the ground-floor lounge with its Viking Wall feature through to the rooftop terrace that looks out across the River Suir and the Waterford quays. Each space has a different energy and a different crowd at different times of day. The ground floor is quieter and more conversational; the upper floors build in intensity as the evening progresses. Pick your level according to the kind of night you are after.

The Oysters

The Reg’s oyster reputation is well earned. Dungarvan Bay oysters, served with lemon and mignonette, are among the best bar food you will find in Waterford City — and pairing them with a cold pint of stout in a building built against a medieval wall is an experience that is hard to replicate anywhere else. The food menu extends to bar classics done well, but the oysters are the reason to make the stop.

Good to Know

The Reg is located on The Mall, Waterford, in the historic block adjacent to Reginald’s Tower and the Viking Triangle. The rooftop is weather-dependent — book ahead if you want to guarantee a table up there on a summer evening, particularly on weekends. Opening hours vary by season; check the venue directly for current times. The Reg is a short walk from the city’s main hotel cluster and from Waterford Train Station.

The Reg represents the best argument for Waterford’s quality of pub offer: serious food, serious drink, a genuinely remarkable building, and a rooftop that earns its reputation on a warm evening. Few Irish cities can match this combination in a single venue. If you only have one night in Waterford and want to see what the city does well, start here.
