Heritage tourism has a tendency to keep history at arm’s length — behind glass, behind ropes, behind a wall of explanatory text. King of the Vikings does the opposite. It puts you inside the founding of Ireland’s oldest city, and it does so with a level of immersion that surprises most visitors who thought they were too sensible to be excited by virtual reality.
What Is It?
King of the Vikings is a full-immersion virtual reality experience built on the real archaeology of Waterford. The reconstruction of the Viking city — its streets, houses, quays and fortifications — was created using data from the 1980s and 90s excavations, the most extensive urban archaeological digs ever carried out in Ireland. What you walk through is not a fantasy; it is a scholarly reconstruction of a real place at a real point in time.
The experience takes you from the deck of a Viking longship approaching the settlement, through the gates of the city, into the streets and buildings of 914 AD Waterford. You encounter Viking warlords and merchants, witness a council meeting, and explore spaces that no longer physically exist but are reconstructed with archaeological precision. The narrative is compelling and the detail is extraordinary — from the cargo in the warehouses to the style of the clothing on the figures you encounter.
Built on Real History
The archaeology behind the experience is genuinely significant. When development work began in Waterford in the 1980s, excavations in the area around High Street and Arundel Square uncovered the largest assemblage of Viking-age artefacts ever found in Ireland. Wooden buildings, leather shoes, bone combs, gaming pieces, tools, organic waste — the level of preservation in the waterlogged ground was exceptional. The King of the Vikings experience was designed to translate this scholarship into something accessible, and it succeeds.
Is It Good for Kids?
Brilliant for kids. The Viking theme, the immersive format, the sense of physical presence in another time — it captures younger visitors completely. There is an age recommendation for the VR headsets (check when booking), but the experience is designed to work for a wide age range. Teachers bringing school groups consistently rate it among the best heritage field trips available in Munster.
Practical Information
King of the Vikings is located in the Viking Triangle on the Waterford quays. Booking in advance is strongly recommended, particularly in summer, as session sizes are limited by the number of headsets. The experience runs roughly 45 minutes. It is included in some Waterford Treasures combination packages — check the Waterford Treasures website for current ticketing options.
